Mission Statement

The goals of the Daniel Boone High School Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program are to provide an opportunity for secondary school students to learn about the basic elements and requirements for National Security as well as their personal obligations as American citizens. The DBHS MCJROTC program seeks to achieve the following:
  • Teach respect for proper authority.
  • Develop informed and responsible citizens.
  • To strengthen character.
  • To promote an understanding of the basics elements and requirements for national security.
  • To help form habits of self-discipline, self-confidence, self-esteem, responsibility and accountability.
  • To develop respect for and an understanding of the need for constituted authority in a democratic society.
  • To help develop leadership and management skills.

Major Steven M. Sessis, a native of Ironton, Ohio, was commissioned a Second Lieutenant upon graduation from the Ohio State University in June 1977. His tours with the Fleet Marine Forces (FMF) include service as a Tank Platoon Commander, 1st Tracked Vehicle Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, Okinawa, Japan; Tank Company Commander, 1st Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, California, and Battalion Executive Officer, 1st Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division, 29 Palms, California.
Major Sessis' non FMF tours include service as: Officer Selection Officer, Recruiting Station Los Angeles, California; Platoon Commander, Officer Candidate School, Quantico Virginia; Commanding Officer, Marine Detatchment, USS Long Beach (CGN-9); Commanding Officer, MCSF Training Company, Marine Corps Security Force Battalion, Atlantic, Norfolk, Virginia; Tactics Instructor and Deputy Director for Curriculum Development, Amphibious Warfare School, Quantico, Virginia. Major Sessis retired from active duty in 1997. He has been the Senior Marine Instructor at Daniel Boone High School's Marine Corps Junior ROTC since May 1997. Major Sessis holds bachelors and masters degrees in education and is a graduate of the Basic School, US Army Armor Officer Course, Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Warfare Course, Amphibious Warfare School, Command and Staff College, US Army Airborne School, US Army Anti-Terrorism Instructors Course, US Army Pre-Command Course, US Navy Nuclear Weapons Security Officer Course, US Navy Intelligence Course, and the Instructional Management Course. A veteran of Operations Nimble Archer, Valiant Usher, and Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Major Sessis' personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with two gold stars, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with three gold stars, and the Army Achievement Medal.

Master Gunnery Sergeant John Daniels Jr. is the Marine Instructor of the Daniel Boone High School Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. He is a 1988 graduate of Daniel Boone High School and an alumnus of the MCJROTC Program. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on Sept 15th, 1988 and proceeded to Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD), Parris Island, South Carolina for basic training. Concluding boot camp he reported to Marine Corps Communication Electronics School (MCCES) 29 Palms,
 California where he trained to become a Communication Center Operator. In March 1989, he reported to Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, Okinawa Japan and was assigned as a watch stander for the base Communication Center. In April 1990, he executed orders to Marine Corps Combat Development Command (MCCDC) Quantico, Virginia for duty. Here he worked as a Communication Center Watch Supervisor. In June 1994 he reported to 7th Communications Battalion, III Marine Expeditionary Force for duty. He supported multiple command exercises including Joint Task Force Exercise Cobra Gold in Korat and Songkhla Thailand, Tandem Thrust in Queensland Australia, and Ulchi-Focus Lens in Pohang South Korea. In July 1997 he reported to 8th Marine Regiment, Camp Lejeune, NC where he assumed the duties as the Data Communications Chief. In January 2000 he reported to Recruiting School in San Diego California and upon conclusion reported to Recruiting Station Nashville Tennessee. His prosperous tour earned him the Marine Recruiter of the Year two years in a row. He returned voluntarily to recruiting duty in 2005 for a second tour of independent duty as the Station Commander of RSS Knoxville Tennessee. He earned the Staff Non-commissioned Officer of the Year for two consecutive years. He executed orders to 8th Communication Battalion in August 2008 and was redirected to II Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF) for direct support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). He was promoted to the rank of Master Gunnery Sergeant (MGySgt) on June 1st, 2011. In June 2011 MGySgt Daniels reported to Marine Special Operations Command (MARSOC) and assumed the duties as the Regimental Communications Chief. In 2012 he reported to the Center for Security Forces in Brunswick Maine where he completed Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE), school. He was then certified as a Special Operations Capability Specialist-Communicator (SOCS-C). On January 6th, 2014 he was reassigned as the MARSOC Communications Chief until he retired in October 2016. Master Gunnery Sergeant Daniels' awards include the two Meritorious Service Medals, two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, seven Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, nine Marine Corps Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, Iraqi Campaign Service Medal with Bronze Star, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Korean Service Defense Medal, and the Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.

The Competitive Marksmanship Team is comprised of cadets who have demonstrated maturity, a thorough understanding of weapons safety and a high degree of marksmanship skills. Team members are selected after an extensive marksmanship training program in which all cadets participate. Competitive marksmanship offers team members the opportunity to develop coordination,
discipline, applied knowledge, and sportsmanship skills. The Avanti 887 and Crosman Challenger .177 caliber pellet rifles used by the team exhibit similar ballistic characteristics as a small bore .22 caliber rifle, but are easier to handle and are much safer to use in a training or competitive environment. The team has won awards in the state, regional, and national levels.

​The Physical Training Team is a competitive team designed for cadets who express interest in challenging and improving their level of physical fitness and stamina. The goal of the team is to increase athletic participation and to promote a healthy lifestyle. It provides an opportunity for cadets to become strong in mind, body, and spirit. Team members embody a standard of maturity, self-confidence, and a desire 
to excel in all aspects of the JROTC program. Cadets on the team will get the chance to compete in various challenges throughout the school year, with practices taking place twice a week.

The drill team has performed competitively since 1972. Dedication to teammates, school, and community is a prerequisite as team members routinely perform in school events, parades, and other ceremonial commitments throughout the year. The team is led this year by seasoned commanders with a proven record 
of success and by new leaders who are eager to continue building upon the command's reputation as one of the finest drill units in the Nation. ​

The Academic Team provides unique involvement opportunities for cadets devoted to personal development, peer collaboration, and academic excellence. It also provides an environment for cadets to take what they learn in the classroom and compete against other schools in a fast paced academic quiz setting.  Topics range from scholastic subjects to pop culture and general knowledge questions. 
Participation in team activities, attendance to regular study sessions, and showing a positive work ethic are keystones for team selection. The team competes in a number of events throughout the school year. With the ultimate goal of selection to the JROTC Leadership and Academic Bowl (JLAB) national championship, held annually in Washington D.C.

​Orienteering is a navigation race held in unfamiliar terrain, using a map and compass. A team is comprised of cadets who utilize various navigational skills blended with long distance running in order to compete against other teams. The Orienteering Team offers a variety of events for both solo runners and teams. Cadets will learn the fundamentals of map 
features, terrain association, and compass work. Using these skill sets, cadets will attempt to locate certain checkpoints in an allotted amount of time. The Orienteering Team also provides an improved sense of confidence, decision making skills, and teamwork.
